Tibetan Singing Bowls

How to choose singing bowls

• Size matters most: small bowls (8–12cm) sound higher and are easy to hold; 15–20cm bowls are versatile; larger bowls give deep, long tones.
• Check whether a striker and cushion are included, or add them separately.
• Decorative bowls (painted, engraved or aluminium) are lighter and chosen for looks as much as sound.
• Heavier, thicker walls generally sustain a note for longer.

Available in: Seven Chakra stones.

Using and caring for them

• Place the bowl on a cushion or your flat, open palm.
• Tap the outside wall gently with the mallet to wake the bowl.
• Circle the rim slowly with even pressure; once it starts to sing, keep the speed steady.
• For a softer sound, strike rather than rub, and let each tone fade fully.
• Wipe with a soft, dry cloth after use; skin oils can mark the metal.
• Avoid harsh polish on engraved or coloured finishes.
• Store somewhere dry and away from hard objects that could dent the rim.

In meditation and sound practice, the bowl's fading tone is used as a focal point, and bowls are often played at the beginning and end of a session. Engraved designs such as mandalas, the Om symbol or the Buddha are decorative and devotional; they reflect the traditions the bowls come from. Traditions are described for interest; we make no health claims.
