The Moon

The Moon Room

Tonight’s phase, the month ahead, and a globe you can turn.

The Moon

Tonight, approximate

Waning Gibbous

About 84% lit, from astronomy-engine. Not a live feed.

How this picture is made

Light begins to recede. Often treated as a time for gratitude and sharing what is done.

Age 18.6 days into an average 29.53-day cycle. Tonight’s estimate is Waning Gibbous, for 29/10/2026. Turning the globe is a model view. Face Earth returns the near side. The dates are not precise enough for an eclipse or for moonrise.

Next new moon, about 9 Nov 2026, 21:57 UTC. Next full moon, about 24 Nov 2026, 16:19 UTC.

Surface colour and elevation are from the NASA Scientific Visualization Studio CGI Moon Kit, using Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter imagery and laser altimetry. United States government work. A wide screen loads the 4K colour map and a 4-pixels-per-degree elevation model. Displacement scale is 0.012 of the radius, about the Moon’s real peak-to-trough relief, not a crater close-up. The source file’s exact metre encoding is not in the image header, so the vertical scale is approximate. A narrow screen uses the 2K colour map only. Tonight’s light uses astronomy-engine. The cycle buttons still use the 29.53-day model. Neither is an eclipse prediction.
