Crystals

What do crystals mean? 60 crystals and their traditional meanings

Short answer: Each crystal carries meanings handed down through folklore, mythology and modern crystal practice, usually tied to its colour. Rose quartz is linked with love, amethyst with calm, citrine with optimism, black tourmaline with protection and clear quartz with clarity. Below are 60 well-known stones and the traditions attached to them.

How crystal meanings come about

Most meanings grew from what people saw in a stone. Red and orange stones such as carnelian and jasper were linked with blood, courage and warmth; blue stones such as lapis and sodalite with sky, sea and truthful speech; black stones with protection and the earth. Ancient writers like Pliny the Elder recorded stone lore, medieval lapidaries added more, and the modern crystal movement from the 1970s built on both.

Because of this, two books can give a stone slightly different meanings. Treat a meaning as a starting point for reflection rather than a rule. These are traditional and spiritual associations shared for interest, not health or medical claims.

How to choose by meaning

  • Pick a word you want to keep in mind this season, such as calm, courage or kindness, and look for a stone traditionally linked with it.
  • Or choose with your eye: the stone you keep coming back to is the one you are most likely to use.
  • For a first collection, clear quartz, rose quartz, amethyst and black tourmaline cover the four best-known themes.
