How do you charge crystals, and what is the difference between cleansing and charging?
Short answer: In crystal tradition you charge a stone after cleansing it, to 'fill it up' with an intention. The most popular way is to leave it in full-moon light overnight; others place it on a quartz cluster, in gentle morning sun, or simply hold it and say what you want it to remind you of.
Cleansing vs charging
Cleansing is thought of as clearing a stone; charging as giving it a purpose. In practice many people do both in one sitting: smoke or sound first, then moonlight and an intention. These are traditional and spiritual associations shared for interest, not health or medical claims.
Ways to charge a crystal
Full moon: set stones on a windowsill or outside on the night of the full moon and collect them before the sun is strong.
New moon: some prefer the new moon for stones linked to fresh starts, such as moonstone and labradorite.
Morning sun: an hour of early sun suits warm stones like carnelian, citrine (briefly) and tiger's eye. Avoid long sun for colour-sensitive stones.
A quartz cluster or geode: rest smaller stones on a clear quartz or amethyst cluster overnight.
Intention: hold the stone, breathe slowly and say one short sentence about what it stands for. Write it down if you like.
Sound: a singing bowl or bell after cleansing.
Programming a crystal
'Programming' is a modern word for linking a stone to a single intention. Keep it simple and specific — for example, 'this stone reminds me to pause before I reply'. One stone, one intention, is the usual advice.
