Candle Colour Meanings in Magic and Ritual
In folk magic and modern witchcraft, each candle colour has traditional associations: green for money and growth, pink for love, black for protection and banishing, and white for any purpose. Choose the colour that matches your intention, or use white when in doubt. This guide lists the colour meanings, the main candle types, how to carve and dress a candle, and how to burn candles safely.

Candle types
Spell or chime candles
Small candles, often about 10 cm long, that burn for an hour or two. Ideal for a single sitting.
Pillar and jar candles
Longer burns for intentions held over several days.
Figure candles
Shaped candles, such as hearts, figures or skulls, used in folk magic.
Tea lights
Simple and safe, and right for oil burners and quick devotions.
Carving and dressing
Carving
Inscribe a word, name or symbol with a pin.
Dressing
Rub a little oil from the middle outward to draw something in, or from the ends inward to send something away. Traditions vary.
Herbs
Roll the dressed candle in dried herbs, keeping loose herbs well away from the wick, as they can flare.
Burning safely
Use a stable, heat-proof holder, keep candles away from draughts and anything that can burn, and trim the wick. Never leave a lit candle unattended. If a spell calls for a candle to burn down, choose a small chime candle and stay with it, or snuff it and relight it later. UK delivery is £3.95, free on orders over £40, and usually takes 2–5 working days.

Matching colour with the moon
Many people choose a candle colour and a moon phase together: green on a new or waxing moon for growth, black on a waning moon for letting go, silver or white at the full moon. Check our moon calendar for this month's dates.
Spell candles versus pillar candles
Small spell candles (often 10 cm chimes) burn for about one to two hours, so a ritual can be finished in one sitting. Pillar and jar candles burn for many hours and suit an altar that you return to. Always use a holder that catches drips.
Burning safely, in more detail
Trim wicks to about 5 mm, keep candles away from curtains, shelves above and draughts, and never leave a flame alone. Snuff rather than blow out to avoid scattering wax. Keep matches out of children's reach and set a timer if you tend to lose track during meditation.
What to do with leftover wax
Tradition varies: some people bury leftover wax from a spell, others simply throw it away once it has cooled. If you prefer reuse, melt clean leftovers into a new container with a fresh wick.
Where colour magic comes from
Matching colours to purposes has roots in many places: the liturgical colours of the Church, the planetary colours of medieval astrology, and the folk magic of 19th- and 20th-century America and Europe. Modern witchcraft drew these together. Colour meanings are therefore traditions, not rules, and you can trust your own associations.
Dressing a candle, step by step
- Choose your colour and hold the candle while thinking of your intention.
- If you like, carve a word or symbol into the wax with a pin.
- Rub a little oil from the middle out to the ends to draw something in, or from the ends to the middle to send something away.
- Roll the candle lightly in dried herbs on a plate.
- Place it in a safe holder and light it, staying with it as it burns.
Timing candle work with the moon
Many people like to line up candle work with the moon's phases. The new moon is the traditional time to begin, set an intention or plant a seed of an idea. The waxing moon, as the light grows, is for building and attracting. The full moon is for celebration, gratitude and charging tools by moonlight. The waning moon is for letting go, clearing out and finishing. You do not have to follow this, but it gives a simple monthly rhythm, and our moon calendar shows the exact dates in UK time.
Candles and the days of the week
Older magical traditions match days to planets and colours: Sunday with the sun and gold, Monday with the moon and silver, Tuesday with Mars and red, Wednesday with Mercury and yellow, Thursday with Jupiter and blue or purple, Friday with Venus and green or pink, and Saturday with Saturn and black.
Colour, chakra and crystal pairings
If you like to combine candle and crystal, these pairings follow colour, as most modern practice does.
| Candle colour | Chakra | Crystals of the same colour |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Root chakra | Red jasper, Black tourmaline, Smoky quartz |
| Orange | Sacral chakra | Carnelian, Sunstone, Calcite |
| Yellow | Solar plexus chakra | Citrine, Tiger's eye, Pyrite |
| Green | Heart chakra | Rose quartz, Green aventurine, Rhodonite |
| Blue | Throat chakra | Sodalite, Amazonite, Blue lace agate |
| Indigo | Third eye chakra | Amethyst, Lapis lazuli, Labradorite |
| Violet | Crown chakra | Clear quartz, Amethyst, Selenite |
