About the Birth Chart
What is a birth chart?
A birth chart (or natal chart) is a map of where the Sun, Moon and planets were in the sky at the moment you were born, seen from your birthplace. Astrologers read the sign each planet was in, the house it fell in and the angles between planets as a picture of personality.
Why do I need my birth time?
The Moon moves about 13° a day and the rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so the time sets your rising sign, Midheaven and houses. If you don't know it, tick 'I don't know my time' and we use midday, show the planets in their signs and leave out the rising sign and houses.
How accurate are the positions?
Planet positions are calculated with the open-source astronomy-engine library and checked against Swiss Ephemeris charts to within a few hundredths of a degree. Local time, including historic British Summer Time, is converted to UTC with the international time zone database.
Which house system do you use?
We use Placidus, the most common system in modern Western astrology. Very close to the poles, where Placidus can't be drawn, we switch to Whole Sign houses and say so on the chart.
Is astrology a science?
No. Astrology is a tradition thousands of years old that many people enjoy for reflection and self-discovery. Our readings describe what astrologers traditionally say; they don't predict your future and aren't advice about health, money or relationships.
Is my birth data stored?
No. Your details live only in the page link and, if you press Save, on your own device. We don't keep them on our server.
