Your new beginnings jar

Everything you need and seven simple steps. Tonight's moon: Waning Gibbous (75% lit).

What you'll need

The jar ritual

Moon now: Waning Gibbous. Next new moon Mon 9 Nov, next full moon Tue 24 Nov (UK time).

  1. Pick your moment

The moon is waning right now, traditionally best for jars about releasing or protecting. For drawing something in, you might wait for the new moon. The next new moon is Mon 9 Nov. Set aside half an hour somewhere quiet.

  2. Clear your space

Tidy a small surface, open a window and light your incense. Wafting the smoke over your jar and ingredients is a traditional way to begin.

  3. Write your intention

On a small strip of paper, write your intention in the present tense, as if it's already true. You could use: "I begin again with an open heart." Fold it towards you three times and put it in the jar first.

  4. Add your ingredients

Add each ingredient one at a time, saying what it stands for as you go. Hold your Moonstone for a few slow breaths before placing it in, then add the crystal chips on top.

  5. Seal the jar

Close the lid. Light your white or silver candle on a heatproof dish and let a little wax drip around the lid to seal it. Never leave the flame unattended and snuff it out when you're done.

  6. Keep it close

Tie a ribbon or thread around the neck, then keep the jar somewhere you'll see it: a windowsill, bedside table or altar. Some people hold it and repeat their intention at each new or full moon.

  7. Let it go

When the intention feels complete, thank it, open the jar, return natural ingredients to the earth or compost, and cleanse your crystals to use again.

About manifestation jars

What is a manifestation jar?

A manifestation jar (also called a spell jar or intention jar) is a small jar filled with crystals, herbs and a written intention, then sealed with candle wax. It comes from folk magic traditions and is used as a visual reminder of something you'd like to focus on.

What do I put in a manifestation jar?

Usually a written intention, a crystal linked with your goal, crystal chips, a few dried herbs or spices from the kitchen, and a candle to seal the lid. Choose an intention above and we'll list exactly what to use, with real pieces from our shop and household extras marked.

When is the best time to make one?

In tradition the new moon and waxing moon are best for drawing something in, the full moon for gratitude and blessing, and the waning moon for releasing or protection. We show tonight's real moon phase so you can choose.

Will a manifestation jar work?

A jar is a tradition for reflection and focus, not a guarantee of any outcome, and it isn't a health treatment. Many people simply enjoy it as a mindful way to set an intention.

Is it safe?

Use a heatproof dish under the candle, keep flames away from children, pets and curtains, never leave a flame unattended, and don't eat any of the ingredients. Keep small crystal chips away from little ones.
