Tarot vs Oracle Cards: What's the Difference?
Tarot decks follow a fixed structure of 78 cards (22 major and 56 minor arcana), with meanings shared across decks. Oracle decks have no fixed structure: each sets its own number of cards, theme and meanings in its guidebook. Choose tarot for depth and a shared symbolic language, and oracle for quick, gentle daily prompts. Many people use both.
Tarot in brief
Tarot began as a card game in 15th-century Italy, where the decks were called tarocchi. It took on its esoteric and reading tradition in 18th-century France, through writers such as Antoine Court de Gébelin and Etteilla, and in 19th-century Britain through the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Because the structure is fixed, what you learn with one deck carries over to the next.
Oracle in brief
Oracle decks are a looser, mostly modern tradition. Lenormand, a 36-card deck named after the French fortune-teller Marie Anne Lenormand, is a more structured cousin. Most oracle decks have 30–60 cards, often with words or affirmations printed on them, so you can read them straight away.
Which suits you?
Choose tarot if…
you enjoy learning a system, want detailed spreads and like the idea of a shared symbolic language.
Choose oracle if…
you want one encouraging card each morning, prefer words on the card, or are buying for someone new to cards.
Use both
A popular habit is to read a tarot spread and then draw one oracle card as a summary or a piece of advice.
Reading oracle cards
Shuffle, draw one to three cards and read the guidebook entry, then think about how it applies to you. There are no reversals unless the deck suggests them. Oracle cards also make good journaling prompts and altar cards for the week.

A short history of each
Tarot cards began in 15th-century Italy as a card game called tarocchi, and were only linked with fortune-telling and esoteric ideas in 18th-century France. The Rider-Waite-Smith deck of 1909, drawn by Pamela Colman Smith, gave us the illustrated minor arcana most people learn today. Oracle cards are newer: decks like the Lenormand (named after a famous 19th-century French fortune-teller) set the pattern, and modern oracle decks have exploded since the 1990s.
How to read oracle cards
- Shuffle while thinking of your question or simply of the day ahead.
- Draw one card, or three for past, present and next step.
- Look at the image before reading the guidebook; notice your first feeling.
- Then read the deck's meaning and see what fits.
- Write the card in a journal and check in on it in the evening.
How to start with tarot
Begin with the 22 major arcana: they tell a story from the Fool to the World and are the easiest to remember. Then learn the four suits as four areas of life: Wands for drive and creativity, Cups for feelings and relationships, Swords for thoughts and conflict, and Pentacles for money, work and the body. Our free 78 tarot card meanings and how to read tarot guide take you step by step.
Do you need both?
No. Many readers only ever use one. But they work well together, and having an oracle deck alongside your tarot can make practice feel lighter on days when a full spread feels like too much.
Choosing your first deck of either kind
Look at as many card images as you can before you buy, and choose the art that speaks to you. For tarot, check that the minor arcana are illustrated. For oracle, read a few of the card messages to make sure the tone suits you, as some decks are gentle and others more direct.
Caring for any deck
