Past, present, future tarot spread
The classic three-card spread. It tells a story from left to right and works for almost any question. Best for an overview of how a situation is unfolding.
At a glance
| Cards | 3 |

| Best for | An overview of how a situation is unfolding |
The positions
| # | Position | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Past | what has led to this point |
| 2 | Present | where things stand now |
| 3 | Future | where things are heading if nothing changes |
How to lay it out
- Shuffle while thinking of your question; cut the deck if you like.
- Lay 3 cards face down in order, then turn them over one at a time.
- Note any reversed cards; some readers use reversals, others turn every card upright.
- Read each position, then the spread as a whole.
How to read it
Read the cards as a sentence: the past card explains the present, and the present leads to the future. Note whether the suits change: a shift from Swords to Cups, say, suggests conflict softening into feeling.
Tip
The future card is a direction, not a fixed fate. If you dislike it, ask what you can change in the present.
Remember
Tarot is a tool for reflection. It can help you think a question through, but it does not decide your future, and it is not a substitute for professional advice on health, legal or money matters.
