Letting go: a Waning Moon ritual

Six simple steps for any evening as the moon shrinks towards new. Take your time; there's no wrong way to do it.

1. Your intention
2. Moon phase
  1. Choose your evening

Pick any evening as the moon shrinks towards new. The waning moon is traditionally for releasing: clearing space before the next cycle. Set aside 15–20 quiet minutes and put your phone on silent.

  2. Clear your space

Tidy a small surface, open a window and light a white sage smudge stick. Many people like to waft the smoke around the room as a simple way to mark the start.

Our pick: Smudge Stick - White Sage & Ruda 10cm

  3. Light your candle

Place a Cleansing spell candle on a heatproof dish and light it. Say your intention, letting go, out loud or in your head.

Our pick: Magic Spell Candle - Cleansing

  4. Hold your crystal

Hold Smoky Quartz in both hands for a few slow breaths. In tradition this stone is linked with letting go; take the moment simply to focus.

Our pick: Gemstone Top Polished Points - Smoky Quartz (approx 5-6 pieces)

  5. Write it down

Write what you are ready to put down. It can be one word. You might begin with: "I set this down and walk on lighter."

  6. Close the ritual

Tear up the paper (or safely burn it in a heatproof dish) and put your stone away until the new moon. Snuff out the candle and incense rather than leaving them burning.

Rituals are shared as tradition, for reflection. They aren't a promise of any outcome or a health treatment. Never leave a flame unattended.

About the Ritual Builder

How does the Ritual Builder work?

Choose what you'd like to focus on and a moon phase. The builder puts together a simple six-step evening ritual using a candle, incense and a crystal that tradition links with your intention, plus a writing prompt suited to the phase.

Do I need to buy anything?

No. The pieces we suggest are real items from our shop, but any candle, incense or stone you already own works just as well. The ritual is about taking a quiet moment.

Will a ritual make things happen?

Rituals are a tradition for reflection and focus, not a promise of any result, and they are not a health treatment. Think of it as a calm way to mark an intention.

Is it safe to burn candles and incense?

Always use a heatproof dish, keep flames away from curtains, pets and children, open a window for smoke, and never leave anything burning unattended.
