Traditional uses
Among today's practitioners smudging is used to clear a space, commonly when moving into a new home or after a difficult day. Rue (ruda) has its own long folk tradition in Latin America and the Mediterranean as a protective herb. Burning bundles of sacred herbs is rooted in the ceremonies of Indigenous peoples of the Americas; we encourage learning those origins respectfully. Hematite is associated with grounding. Traditional meanings are offered for interest and reflection, not as a health claim.
How to use it
Extinguish fully by pressing into sand or a dish; never leave it smouldering.
Light the tip, let it catch for a few seconds, then blow out the flame.
Hold a heat-proof dish or abalone shell underneath to catch embers.
Walk the smoke around the space and open a window.
Moon idea: the new moon is the traditional time for beginnings and the full moon for gratitude and release.
Evening idea: light it as you switch off screens for the night, a simple cue to wind down.
Safety: always use a heat-proof holder on a stable surface, away from curtains, children and pets.
Care
Keep it dry and in its wrapper until use.
