How do you set new moon intentions?
Short answer: On the night of the new moon, or the day after, write one to three short intentions in the present tense — for example 'I take a walk every morning' — read them aloud by candlelight, and keep the paper somewhere you'll see it until the full moon, when you look back on how it went.
Wording that helps
- Keep it small and in your control: 'I reply to messages within a day', not 'everyone likes me'.
- Use the present tense: 'I am…', 'I do…'.
- One to three intentions, no more.
- Add a first step you can take this week.
Examples
- I go to bed by eleven on weeknights.
- I make space for one creative hour each weekend.
- I speak to myself as kindly as I speak to friends.
- I save a small amount every payday.
A short new moon ritual
- Light a white or silver candle.
- Hold a stone linked with beginnings, such as moonstone or clear quartz.
- Write your intention and read it aloud.
- Tuck the paper under the stone until the full moon.
- Blow out the candle.

More questions
Why set intentions at the new moon?
In tradition the dark new moon is a fresh start, and the growing light over the next two weeks mirrors your effort. It is also a handy monthly reminder.
What if I miss the new moon?
Use the waxing crescent, the next few days. The point is the habit, not the exact hour.
