Cinnamon: history, meaning and how to burn it

Cinnamon is the inner bark of Cinnamomum trees, from Sri Lanka (true cinnamon) and Indonesia, China and Vietnam (cassia). It gives warm, sweet and spicy.

History

Cinnamon was so precious in the ancient world that its true source was kept secret, with Arab traders telling tales of giant birds' nests to protect the trade.

Traditional uses

Burned for warmth, success and prosperity in folk magic, and popular at Yule.

These are traditional and spiritual uses, not health claims.

How to burn it

Cinnamon sticks and cones suit winter. Never put ground spice directly on charcoal, as it flares.

Burning safely

  • Use a heatproof holder or bowl, on a stable surface away from curtains and shelves.
  • Open a window a little; smoke should clear, not build up.
  • Never leave burning incense alone, and keep it away from children, pets and birds.
  • Put it out fully in sand or a dish of water when you are done.

Scents that pair well

Cinnamon blends well with dragon's blood, frankincense and vanilla.
