Where the names come from
The names in wide use today were popularised by the Maine Farmers' Almanac from the 1930s, drawing on Native American and colonial names. Old English month names are recorded by Bede in The Reckoning of Time (725), for example Solmonath for February and Hrethmonath for March. Harvest Moon and Hunter's Moon are long-established English names.
A simple full moon ritual
Prepare
Tidy a small space, open a curtain if you can see the moon, and light a white or silver candle on a safe dish.
Release and give thanks
Write down something you want to let go of and something you are grateful for.
Set out your stones
Place crystals on a sill or table in the moonlight, keeping soft or water-sensitive stones indoors.
Close
Snuff the candle, drink a glass of water and note anything you want to remember.
Blue moons, supermoons and eclipses
A 'blue moon' is either the second full moon in a calendar month or the third of four in a season. 'Supermoon' is a popular term for a full moon near perigee, when it looks slightly larger and brighter. A lunar eclipse can only happen at full moon. The next one visible from the UK is a penumbral eclipse on 20–21 February 2027. UK delivery is £3.95, free on orders over £40, and usually takes 2–5 working days.
Full moon dates by month
Our full moon names pages list every full moon in 2026 and 2027 with UK times, plus the traditional names and stories behind each one.
The full moon in the sky
A full moon happens when the moon sits opposite the sun, so the side facing us is fully lit. It rises around sunset and sets around sunrise. In winter the full moon rides high and stays up for over 16 hours in the UK; in summer it skims low across the southern sky. That is why the June Strawberry Moon often looks golden: you see it through more of the atmosphere.
Full moon rituals, step by step
- Clean and tidy your space; open a window for fresh air.
- Light a white or silver candle.
- Write a list of what has grown or gone well since the new moon.
- Write a second list of what you are ready to release.
- Read the first list aloud with thanks; tear up or safely burn the second.
- Put crystals or a bowl of water on a windowsill overnight to sit in the moonlight.
- Close with a few slow breaths and blow out the candle.
Full moons and the sabbats
Some full moons fall close to a festival on the Wheel of the Year. The Harvest Moon sits near Mabon, the autumn equinox. The Cold Moon is often close to Yule. When a full moon and a sabbat are within a few days of each other, many people combine the two celebrations.
Why moon dates move
The moon takes about 29.5 days to go from full to full, so twelve full moons take about 354 days, 11 fewer than a calendar year. That is why each full moon falls about 11 days earlier than the year before, and why a calendar month occasionally holds two (a Blue Moon).
