Crystal meanings

Larimar: meaning, traditions and care

Larimar is a blue variety of the mineral pectolite, usually sea-blue with white patterns. In modern crystal tradition it is linked with the calm of the sea. At 4.5–5 on the Mohs scale it is softer than quartz (7), so it scratches more easily and needs gentle handling.

History and folklore

  • Its name blends Larissa, the daughter of the man who popularised it in the 1970s, with mar, Spanish for sea.
  • Because it is found in just one area, it is one of the rarer gems in a typical collection.

Traditional meaning

In modern crystal tradition larimar is associated with the calm of the sea. These ideas mostly come from twentieth-century crystal books, built on older folklore. We share them as tradition and for personal meaning, not as health or medical claims.

Zodiac and chakra associations

Crystal writers link larimar with Leo and Pisces, and with the throat chakra. Lists differ between books, so treat these as starting points.

How to care for larimar

Larimar fades in strong sunlight and is fairly soft. Store it in the dark, keep it away from chemicals, and clean it with a soft damp cloth.

Store it in a soft pouch or a lined box, apart from harder stones such as quartz, which could scratch it.

Choosing larimar

  • Look for even colour that suits you; natural larimar varies from piece to piece.
  • Ask whether a piece is dyed, treated or reconstituted. Honest sellers say so.
  • Pick tumbled stones for carrying, larger pieces for display and set jewellery for wearing.

Good companions

Larimar is often paired with Aquamarine, Amazonite and Blue lace agate.
