A Hastings angle on Christmas gifts
Hastings Castle was among the first castles William the Conqueror built after landing in 1066. Much of it has since fallen into the sea through cliff erosion.
Hastings' cliffs give big sea views for moonrise; the darker skies of the South Downs reserve lie to the west. For a stargazer, moon-phase decor, zodiac pieces or a star-sign stone suit the long December nights.
Jack in the Green inspires greenery, May-time candles and folk-witch decor.
At Jack in the Green, a figure covered in leaves is paraded through the Old Town and 'slain' on West Hill to release the spirit of summer, a tradition rather than an ancient rite.
Local event: Hastings Traditional Jack in the Green. A four-day May Day festival (1–4 May in 2026). On the Monday, Jack, covered in foliage, leads a procession from the Fishermen's Museum to West Hill, where he is 'slain' to release the spirit of summer.
Visiting over the holidays
- The castle is reached by the West Hill Cliff Railway or by steps from the Old Town; it opens seasonally.
- Jack in the Green is held over the early May bank holiday weekend.
- The Old Town has steep streets, so wear comfortable shoes.
