Protection Crystal Candle with Rough Black Obsidian

What it is

Protection Crystal Candle with Rough Black Obsidian is a ritual candle made to be lit with an intention in mind. Many spell candles include crystal chips, herbs or a printed theme.

Protection candles are among the oldest folk-magic requests: lit at a threshold, on a windowsill or before a journey. Black and white are the traditional protection colours, and many practitioners light a protection candle on a Saturday, the day of Saturn. A common modern ritual is to write the names of those you want to keep safe on a slip of paper and set the candle on top.

Black is the traditional colour of protection and of banishing what is unwanted. Styling: black looks dramatic on a gothic altar and crisp against white walls.

From the maker: Shaped like a black crystal tower, this candle offers up to 30 hours of burn time to gradually reveal a rough obsidian stone hidden at the bottom. Perfect for setting intentions and manifesting your dreams, it's the ideal accessory to complement your sacred space.

Materials and size

Size: approximately 15.5 x 7.5 x 7cm, weighing about 425g. Allow for small variations between batches.

Traditional uses

Candle magic is one of the simplest folk-magic practices: a candle is chosen by colour or theme, an intention is set, and the candle is lit and left to burn safely. Colour associations are traditional and vary between practices; for example green with abundance, pink with love, white with new beginnings and black with protection. Polished obsidian was used for mirrors by the Aztecs; one such mirror, associated with the Elizabethan scholar John Dee, is in the British Museum. In modern practice obsidian is linked with protection and honest self-reflection. Traditional meanings are offered for interest and reflection, not as a health claim.

How to use it

• For a protection ritual: a common modern ritual is to write the names of those you want to keep safe on a slip of paper and set the candle on top.
• Rest it on a heat-proof plate or holder on a stable surface.
• Trim the wick to around 5mm before lighting.
• Burn it away from draughts, curtains, children and pets, and never leave it unattended.
• If it contains crystal chips, retrieve them from the wax once cool.
• Ritual idea: write your intention on a slip of paper, read it aloud, then light the candle or incense.
• Moon idea: the new moon is the traditional time for beginnings and the full moon for gratitude and release.
• Evening idea: light it as you switch off screens for the night, a simple cue to wind down.

Care

• Store candles flat, somewhere cool and out of sunlight so the colour doesn't fade.
