Materials and size
Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz, typically violet to deep purple. It measures 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. Natural quartz. Colour comes from traces of iron and natural irradiation.
February's traditional birthstone is amethyst, which makes it a popular birthday gift. African amethyst is often a deeper, more saturated purple than Brazilian material.
Size: approximately 6cm. Natural material varies slightly in size, colour and markings.
Traditional uses
Hearts are traditional love tokens; trees symbolise growth and connection; planets and spheres evoke the cosmos. Carving stone into meaningful shapes is an ancient art, from Chinese jade to Egyptian scarabs. A shape adds its own symbolism to the stone. Its name comes from the Greek amethystos, 'not intoxicated', and in older European tradition it was carried as a stone of sobriety and calm thinking. Today it is one of the most popular stones for a quiet corner or meditation shelf. In modern crystal tradition amethyst is linked with the crown and third eye chakra and with Pisces, Aquarius and Virgo. These are traditions and beliefs, described for interest, not health or medical claims.
How to use it
Hold it during a few minutes of quiet reflection.
Place it on a desk, bedside table or altar where you'll see it.
It pairs traditionally with selenite or clear quartz.
Grid idea: crystal grids arrange stones in a pattern such as a circle or the Flower of Life around a central piece and a written intention.
Moon idea: many collectors set their stones out on the night of the full moon and bring them back in the next morning.
Gifting idea: wrap it in a small cloth pouch with a handwritten note about the stone's traditional meaning.
Care
Wipe with a gentle, slightly damp cloth and dry it straight away; keep away from soaps, salt and long soaks. Strong sunlight can fade amethyst over time, so display it out of direct sun.
Dust regularly and keep away from hard surfaces that could chip it.
Who it suits
It suits someone who wants a calm, contemplative piece for a bedside table or meditation spot. At £3.28 it also works as a small add-on gift or stocking filler.
