What it is
Medium Charging Plate 10cm - Lotus Mandala is made from selenite, about 10cm, a soft, silky-white crystal with a natural fibrous glow.
The lotus grows from mud to bloom clean on the water, which is why it symbolises purity and awakening in Buddhist and Hindu art.
At around 10cm this is the mid-sized option: big enough to notice on a shelf, small enough for a desk or windowsill. Mid sizes are the most versatile: they hold a bracelet or a handful of tumbles, or sit happily on a bedside table.
Also in this range (3 in total): Chakra Design (col), Hamsa.
Materials and size
Selenite is a crystalline form of gypsum, soft enough to scratch with a fingernail, typically pearly white with a silky sheen. It measures 2 on the Mohs hardness scale. Natural gypsum.
The Cave of the Crystals in Naica, Mexico, holds selenite beams over 10 metres long.
Size: approximately 10cm. Natural material varies slightly in size, colour and markings.
Traditional uses
Selenite takes its name from Selene, Greek goddess of the moon, because of its pearly sheen. Selenite is named after Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon. In modern practice selenite plates and bowls are used to 'charge' or cleanse other crystals placed on them. In modern crystal tradition selenite is linked with the crown chakra and with Taurus and Cancer. Traditional meanings are offered for interest and reflection, not as a health claim.
How to use it
- Rest other crystals or jewellery on it overnight as a cleansing ritual.
- Use it as a bright, moonlike accent on an altar or bedside table.
- It pairs traditionally with any crystal you want to rest on it.
- Handling tip: selenite can leave fine white dust; a soft dry paintbrush keeps it tidy.
- Display tip: put it on a felt pad or coaster to avoid scratches on both the stone and the furniture.
- Overnight ritual: lay rings, bracelets or tumble stones on it before bed and pick them up in the morning.
Care
- Never wet selenite: it is water-soluble and will dissolve or cloud.
Who it suits
A good choice for someone who already has crystals and wants somewhere to rest them. At £9.60 it also works as a small add-on gift or stocking filler.
