What it is
Colourful Buddha Backflow Incense Burner is a backflow burner: when a backflow cone is lit on top, the smoke flows down through the piece like a waterfall.
It is cast in resin and hand-painted, which keeps it light and allows fine detail; display it indoors.
The Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, taught in northern India around the 5th century BCE. Statues show him in mudras, hand gestures that each carry a meaning, such as touching the earth or turning the wheel of the teachings.
From the maker: An intricate and captivating backflow incense burner in a colourful Buddha and Lotus Leaf design. When the cone is lit the smoke from the cone cascades downwards in a mesmerising waterfall effect to pool at the bottom.
Materials and size
Size: approximately 14 x 11 x 14cm, weighing about 500g. Allow for small variations between batches.
Traditional uses
Incense holders have taken many forms, from Chinese bronze censers to the boat-shaped ash catchers of Indian homes. Backflow cones have a hollow core: the cooling smoke is heavier than air, so it sinks and pours over the burner's channels. Traditional meanings are offered for interest and reflection, not as a health claim.
How to use it
Empty ash once cool.
Never leave a lit flame unattended, and keep it away from curtains, children and pets.
Use backflow cones for the waterfall effect; ordinary cones and sticks smoke upward.
Set on a heat-proof spot away from draughts, which break up the flow of smoke.
Journalling idea: note the date, the moon phase and what you wished for, and look back a month later.
Storage: keep spares somewhere cool and dark so colours and scents stay fresh.
Ritual idea: write your intention on a slip of paper, read it aloud, then light the candle or incense.
Care
Wipe resin build-up with a damp cloth once cool; a cotton bud reaches small channels.
Who it suits
Best for incense lovers.
