History, folklore and tips
The history
Stirling Castle has watched over Scotland's history for centuries. At Aberfoyle, about 40 minutes west, Reverend Robert Kirk wrote 'The Secret Commonwealth' about fairies before his death in 1692.
Folklore and tradition
Local legend says Kirk did not die but was taken into Doon Hill by the fairies, and a pine on the summit is said to hold his spirit.
Visiting tips

Sunrise, sunset and the moon in Stirling
Sunrise, sunset and the moon in Stirling
At the June solstice on 21 June 2027, the sun rises in Stirling at about 04:27 and sets at about 22:07 (BST), giving 17h 39m of daylight, 61 minutes more than in London. At the December solstice on 21 December 2026 it rises at about 08:46 and sets at about 15:41 (GMT), giving only 6h 55m. Around the March equinox (20 March 2027), sunrise is about 06:21 and sunset about 18:27. Between roughly 5 May and 9 August, the sun never sinks far enough below the horizon for full astronomical darkness, so the faintest stars and the Milky Way are hard to see. At Stirling's latitude, even nautical twilight lasts all night from about 1 June to 13 July. That gives the long, blue midsummer nights of the north, and is a good time to look for noctilucent clouds low in the northern sky. In folk tradition the full moon marks the month. The next full moons fall on 24 November, 24 December, 22 January, 20 February, 22 March. Times are calculated (NOAA formulas) and approximate.
Best times of year
Best times of year
Autumn and winter give Stirling its best skies: darkness comes early and the air is often clearer after a cold front.
On the Geminid peak night of 13–14 December 2026 the sky over Stirling is fully dark from about 18:02, and the moon is only 21% lit, so it is a very good year for them. The Geminids are the richest shower of the year and the radiant is up almost all night.
For the Perseids in August 2027 the moon is 84% lit and sets over Stirling at about 00:49, so the best watching is after moonset and before dawn. Full darkness on 12 August starts around 00:21 at 56.1°N.
Give your eyes 20 minutes to adjust and keep phone screens dim. The nearest certified dark site is Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park, about 118 km from Stirling.
On 2 August 2027 a partial solar eclipse is visible across the UK, weather permitting. Never look at the sun without certified eclipse glasses.
