History, folklore and tips
The history
Derbyshire is the heartland of well dressing, where wells are decorated with pictures made from petals pressed into clay. Tissington's dressings, held around Ascension Day, are among the oldest. Arbor Low, a Neolithic henge, is about 45 minutes away.
Folklore and tradition
Well dressing is often said to give thanks for clean water, and Tissington's tradition is linked with the village being spared plague or drought. It is a living Christian and community custom.
Visiting tips
- Well dressings run from May to September in different villages; local calendars list dates.
- Arbor Low is reached through a farm near Monyash.
- Wear boots on the limestone plateau.
Stone connection
Blue John
Derbyshire's Castleton is the only place in the world where Blue John is mined, a banded purple and yellow fluorite worked into bowls and jewellery.

Sunrise, sunset and the moon in Derby
Sunrise, sunset and the moon in Derby
At the June solstice on 21 June 2027, the sun rises in Derby at about 04:40 and sets at about 21:35 (BST), giving 16h 55m of daylight, 17 minutes more than in London. At the December solstice on 21 December 2026 it rises at about 08:16 and sets at about 15:51 (GMT), giving only 7h 34m. Around the March equinox (20 March 2027), sunrise is about 06:11 and sunset about 18:17. Between roughly 17 May and 28 July, the sun never sinks far enough below the horizon for full astronomical darkness, so the faintest stars and the Milky Way are hard to see. In folk tradition the full moon marks the month. The next full moons fall on 24 November, 24 December, 22 January, 20 February, 22 March. Times are calculated (NOAA formulas) and approximate.
Best times of year
Best times of year
Autumn and winter give Derby its best skies: darkness comes early and the air is often clearer after a cold front.
The Quadrantids peak on the night of 3–4 January 2027 with the moon 12% lit. They are short and sharp, best after midnight, and the January cold means layers and a flask are essential.
On the Geminid peak night of 13–14 December 2026 the sky over Derby is fully dark from about 17:58, and the moon is only 21% lit, so it is a very good year for them. The Geminids are the richest shower of the year and the radiant is up almost all night.
Yorkshire Dales International Dark Sky Reserve is about 153 km away if you want truly dark skies; otherwise a park or field away from streetlights will still show the brighter meteors.
On 2 August 2027 a partial solar eclipse is visible across the UK, weather permitting. Never look at the sun without certified eclipse glasses.
