How to use a smudge stick

Smudge sticks are bundles of dried herbs such as white sage, rosemary or lavender, burned so their smoke can be wafted around a room. Smoke cleansing is a tradition in many cultures; people use it to mark a fresh start or to feel a space has been cleared.

Step by step

  • Step 1. Open a window so smoke can leave the room.
  • Step 2. Hold the bundle at an angle and light the tip with a match or lighter.
  • Step 3. Let it flame for a few seconds, then gently blow it out so it smoulders.
  • Step 4. Hold a heatproof dish underneath and walk slowly around the room, wafting the smoke with your hand or a feather.
  • Step 5. Put it out by pressing the tip into sand or a dish of soil, or tapping it in a fireproof bowl.

Looking after it

  • Store in a dry place so it stays easy to light.
  • Snip off the charred end before reusing if it gets crumbly.

Safety

  • Never leave smouldering herbs unattended.
  • Keep away from children, pets and anyone with breathing sensitivities.
  • Don't use near smoke alarms you can't ventilate around.
