Practice

Ritual

Short ceremonies you can finish. A flame is optional.

10 minutes

One sentence at the new moon

  1. Look up the phase, or simply decide that today counts.
  2. Write a single sentence in the present tense that you could actually keep.
  3. Put the paper somewhere you will see it once, not somewhere you must worship it.

15 minutes

An evening light

  1. If you use a candle, set it on a stable non-flammable dish. No fabric nearby. No empty room.
  2. Dim the other lights. Sit for one song or four minutes.
  3. Extinguish the flame before you leave. If fire is unwelcome, use a lamp.

5 minutes

Three lines of gratitude

  1. Name three specific things, not three virtues.
  2. At least one should be small enough to have happened today.
  3. Stop. Do not turn the list into a productivity system.

20 minutes

Wrapping as the gift

  1. Choose paper you already have.
  2. Write the note before you wrap, so the object does not have to carry the whole meaning.
  3. Skip the slogan tissue. A plain fold is enough.
