Candles, bowls and altars
How do you set up a simple altar at home?
Short answer: Choose a small, steady surface you'll see every day, lay down a cloth, and add a few meaningful things: a candle, a crystal or two, something from nature, and a symbol of what you want to focus on. Keep it uncluttered, change it with the seasons, and never leave a flame unattended.
What to include
- A cloth to define the space
- A candle (or LED candle) in a safe holder
- One to three crystals
- Something living or natural: flowers, leaves, a shell, water
- Elemental symbols, if you like: incense for air, a candle for fire, a bowl of water, a stone or salt for earth
- A card, photo or written intention
Where to put it
A shelf, windowsill or the corner of a dresser works well. Facing east (sunrise) or north is traditional in some paths, but somewhere you'll actually pause is more important.
Changing it with the year
Many people refresh an altar for each sabbat or moon: dark colours and apples at Samhain, evergreens at Yule, flowers at Beltane, grain at Lammas.

More questions
Does an altar have to be religious?
No. Many people keep a simple altar as a calm, personal focus space with no religious meaning.
Is it safe to burn candles on an altar?
Use stable holders, keep clear of fabric and shelves above, and never leave candles burning unattended.
