Incense and smudging

How do you burn incense sticks and cones safely?

Short answer: Light the tip of the stick or cone, let it flame for a few seconds, then gently blow it out so it glows and smokes. Stand it in a heatproof holder that catches the ash, in a ventilated room, away from curtains, and never leave it burning unattended.

Sticks

  • Push the bare end firmly into a holder or ash catcher.
  • Light the coated tip and let it catch for 5–10 seconds.
  • Blow out the flame; you want an ember and a thin ribbon of smoke.
  • A standard stick burns for roughly 30–60 minutes.

Cones

  • Stand the cone on a heatproof dish or burner, point up.
  • Light the tip, wait for it to glow, blow it out.
  • Cones burn hotter and quicker, around 15–30 minutes, so the dish matters.

Backflow cones

Backflow cones have a hollow core. Light them on a backflow burner and the smoke falls down the 'waterfall' instead of rising. Use them in still air: a draught breaks the effect.

Simple safety

  • Ventilate the room and keep incense away from children, pets and fabrics.
  • Never leave burning incense unattended or burn it while you sleep.
  • If anyone in the home has asthma or breathing sensitivities, choose a different ritual.
  • Put out a stick by pressing the tip into sand or ash, not water if the holder is wood.

What scents are used for, traditionally

  • Sandalwood: calm and meditation
  • Frankincense: devotion and blessing
  • Nag champa: a classic temple scent for focus
  • Lavender: rest and gentleness
  • Dragon's blood: protection and courage
  • White sage: clearing and cleansing

More questions

Why does my incense keep going out?

The ember needs air. Angle the stick slightly, keep it out of a draught that blows ash back, and make sure the coating is dry.

Is incense smoke safe to breathe?

Any smoke is an irritant. Burn incense in moderation in a ventilated room, and avoid it around people with breathing conditions.

What is a backflow incense burner?

A sculpted burner with channels that make the smoke from hollow backflow cones flow downwards like a waterfall.
