Lit and gently extinguished, it smoulders and releases aromatic smoke. Palo santo, 'holy wood', is from a South American tree and has long been burned in Andean folk ceremony; it is traditionally used to clear a space. The fragrance is sweet, woody and slightly minty. White stands for new beginnings and cleansing, and can stand in for any other colour in candle magic. Styling: white is the most versatile finish, fitting minimal, Scandi and bohemian rooms alike. From the maker: This little bundle pairs Californian white sage with a stick of palo santo, two of the best-loved woods and herbs for smudging. Smudging is a traditional practice in which the smoke of burning sacred plants is used to cleanse a person or a space of negative energy. Smudge Sticks. One smudge stick. ## Traditions (belief, not health claims) Burning bundles of sacred herbs is rooted in the ceremonies of Indigenous peoples of the Americas; we encourage learning those origins respectfully. In modern practice smudging is used to clear a space, regularly when moving into a new home or after a difficult day. Rue (ruda) has its own long folk tradition in Latin America and the Mediterranean as a protective herb. These are traditions and beliefs, described for interest, not health or medical claims. ## How to use - Light the tip, let it catch for a few seconds, then blow out the flame. - Hold a heat-proof dish or abalone shell underneath to catch embers. - Walk the smoke around the space and open a window. - Extinguish fully by pressing into sand or a dish; never leave it smouldering. - Ventilation: a slightly open window keeps scent pleasant and smoke light. - Gifting idea: pair it with a matching crystal or a holder for a ready-made ritual gift. - Journalling idea: note the date, the moon phase and what you wished for, and look back a month later. ## Care - Keep it dry and in its wrapper until use. ## Policies - Delivery: UK delivery £3.95, free over £40, 2–5 working days.
