## What is really happening

No planet ever moves backwards. Mercury orbits the Sun faster than Earth, and when it overtakes us on the inside lane, it seems to drift backwards against the stars for a few weeks, like a slower car seeming to slip back as you pass it.

## Mercury retrograde in Pisces and Aquarius

Mercury rules communication, travel and technology in astrology, so its retrogrades are the famous ones: a traditional time to double-check messages, back up files and leave room in travel plans. This retrograde moves from Pisces back into Aquarius, so astrologers apply its themes to Pisces's areas of life and then Aquarius's. See our [Pisces page](https://www.starseeduk.co.uk/zodiac/pisces) for that sign's traditions.

This is astrology, a tradition of meaning, not a scientific forecast. Many people simply use a retrograde as a nudge to slow down and check the details.

## Ideas for the weeks ahead

- Re-read important emails before sending.
- Back up your phone and computer.
- Revisit unfinished projects rather than starting new ones.
- Reconnect with old friends: 're-' words are the traditional theme.
- Journal what comes up, with a calming stone such as [amethyst](https://www.starseeduk.co.uk/crystals/amethyst) nearby if you like the tradition.
