## Sunrise, sunset and the moon in Reading

At the June solstice on 21 June 2027, the sun rises in Reading at about 04:46 and sets at about 21:24 (BST), giving 16h 37m of daylight, 1 minutes less than in London. At the December solstice on 21 December 2026 it rises at about 08:07 and sets at about 15:57 (GMT), giving only 7h 50m. Around the March equinox (20 March 2027), sunrise is about 06:09 and sunset about 18:15. Between roughly 24 May and 21 July, the sun never sinks far enough below the horizon for full astronomical darkness, so the faintest stars and the Milky Way are hard to see. In folk tradition the full moon marks the month. The next full moons fall on 24 November, 24 December, 22 January, 20 February, 22 March. Times are calculated (NOAA formulas) and approximate.

## Heritage, pagan and folklore sites near Reading

Check opening times with each site's keeper before you go, and leave stones, wells and trees as you found them. Leave no offerings that cannot rot away, such as tea lights, ribbons or plastic.

- **Reading Abbey ruins.** Founded by Henry I in 1121, who was buried there. The ruins reopened to the public in 2018.
- **Uffington White Horse.** The Bronze Age chalk figure on the Berkshire Downs, a short walk along the Ridgeway from Wayland's Smithy long barrow.

## Best times of year

If you only plan a few nights a year from Reading, choose clear, moonless nights in the colder months.

The Quadrantids peak on the night of 3–4 January 2027 with the moon 12% lit. They are short and sharp, best after midnight, and the January cold means layers and a flask are essential.

On the Geminid peak night of 13–14 December 2026 the sky over Reading is fully dark from about 17:58, and the moon is only 21% lit, so it is a very good year for them. The Geminids are the richest shower of the year and the radiant is up almost all night.

Moore's Reserve (South Downs International Dark Sky Reserve) is about 64 km away if you want truly dark skies; otherwise a park or field away from streetlights will still show the brighter meteors.

On 2 August 2027 a partial solar eclipse is visible across the UK, weather permitting. Never look at the sun without certified eclipse glasses.
