Vanilla is the cured seed pods of the Vanilla orchid, from Madagascar, Mexico and Indonesia. It gives sweet, warm and comforting.

## History

Vanilla came from Mexico, where the Totonac people grew it and the Aztecs flavoured chocolate with it. Hand-pollination, discovered in 1841 by Edmond Albius, made it possible to grow elsewhere.

## Traditional uses

Burned for comfort, warmth and a welcoming home.

These are traditional and spiritual uses, not health claims.

## How to burn it

Vanilla incense and wax melts are both easy choices; vanilla blends well with patchouli and sandalwood.

## Burning safely

- Use a heatproof holder or bowl, on a stable surface away from curtains and shelves.
- Open a window a little; smoke should clear, not build up.
- Never leave burning incense alone, and keep it away from children, pets and birds.
- Put it out fully in sand or a dish of water when you are done.
